16amp or 13amp Model?
About eight years ago the UK power supply was standardised to 230 volts (previously it had been 240 volts), in addition electricity companies are allowed to reduce this standard upto a further 6%. This means, depending on what area you live in, your supply could be as low as 216 volts. It's common for electricity companies to supply at this lower level, which means that firing times on a 13amp kiln will become slower and the higher temperatures required for porcelain firings may not be reached.
If you are in an area where the electricity supply is maintained at 230 volts you should be okay with a 13amp HobbyTec 45 for porcelain firings. However it should be kept in mind that your supply company can, quite legitimately, reduce this supply to as low as 216 volts.
The 13 amp kiln will plug into a normal 3 pin household socket. If you do have a 13 amp kiln make sure you use it on a circuit that does not have any other appliances running on it. Each additional appliance, such a fridge or washing machine, you run on the same circuit as your 13 amp kiln will take some of the power that the kiln needs and lengthen the firing time or even prevent the kiln reaching the high temperature needed for a porcelain firing.
The solution is to opt for 230 volt, 16 amp kiln. The 16 amp model runs on a domestic power supply but will not encounter the possible problems of a reduced power standard that can be experienced with a 13 amp model. A 16 amp model must not be plugged into a normal household socket, but instead be hard wired straight back to the consumer unit to its own fuse or MCB. In addition, if wished, an inline 16amp fuse holder can be installed near where the kiln is sited. For convenience it's also a good idea to fit a blue 230 volt, round pin socket and plug to the kiln (don't use a yellow one as they're for 110 volt supply). If you need to move your kiln it is easy to pull out the plug and wheel it around. We always recommend you opt for a 16 amp kiln as it cannot be guaranteed that your electricity supplier will meet the full 230 volts required for a 13 amp model. The price for the 16amp model is the same as the 13amp model.
