Pyrometric cones are pyramids of clay and glaze that soften and bend at specific temperature.  Use Junior Jones in kilns with a kiln sitter assembally to switch the kiln off at the cones predetermined temperature.  Supplied in box of 50 cones.

Use self supporting Witness Cones regularly to check that your kilns sitter is calibrated correctly and that your kiln is firing at the correct temperature.  Use three:  one the same no. as the Junior Cone being used for the firing and one no. either side.  After the firing the Witness Cone the same no. as the Junior Cone in the sitter should be bent so it is almost or just touching the shelf, the next cooler cone flat on the shelf nand the nottest Witness Cone not bent or only just bent.  If the readings are different to this then your kiln sitter needs adjusting.

All kiln elements wear with age and use.  The more use they get the quicker they weaar.  Spots of glaze falling on the elements will damage them and reduce efficiency.

Indications of worn elements are cool spots, the kiln taking longer and longer to reach firing temperatures, etc.  If you are experiencing these symptoms it may be time to replace your elements
