How to make porcelain teeth for authentic
antique repro baby dolls. |
|
Porcelain teeth really give a great finish to baby dolls and are a must for
authentic reproductions like JDK Hilda.
Greenware Preparation: After cutting out the mouth shape in your dolls
head, use an appropriate size eye beveller and bevel a little behind the mouth. This will allow the teeth to sit forward. Fire to porcelain.
Making the Teeth: Pour a puddle of white slip onto the outside of a mold,
use a large palette knife to spread the slip out to a thickness of 2mm-3mm.
When the slip on the mold is leather hard cut a rectangle of appropriate size
for the teeth to go in your dolls head (don't forget to allow for shrinkage in firing).
Use a double ball stylus to mark a dividing lines on the rectangle for the
number of teeth you want. Take a drinking straw and slice off half of the end with a new sharp scalpel to make a half round shape. Use the cut end of the straw to press out the shape curved end of each tooth in the rectangle of slip. Where necessary clean and smooth the greenware teeth. Fire to bisque. |

Top Tip: While your at it why not make yourself a stock of porcelain teeth in
different sizes and numbers of teeth per set. |
|
Setting Teeth in a Dolls Head: Place a little Aral Eye Wax inside the head,
above the upper lip. Press the teeth onto the Eye Wax and adjust their position. Mix Eye Setting Plaster and place a little on the top of the teeth from inside the head. Set aside for plaster to set. |
