Mary Ann was the Festival Souvenir mold given to all
delegates at The Aral UK Doll Festival at Brighton in
August 200.
She is a beautiful little baby doll originally made by the
German firm Schoenau & Hoffmeister around 1920.
She is marked on the back of the head with PB in a
star with S to the left and H to the right of the star and
Germany underneath.
The original Mary Ann, that the Festival mould was
made from, is 16½" in size with an open mouth and
two teeth. She has brown sleep eyes and a brown
mohair wig, but she was also made with blue sleep
eyes and a blonde wig.
The reproduction baby doll size is 12½" on a baby
body or you can also make her as a boy or a girl on a
German toddler child body, although never originally
made on a child body, the doll size will be 16"

China Painting Schedule
All china paint firings are 180ºC per hour to 360ºC, then Full to 720ºC on an H3i controller or Cone 018 in the kiln
sitter Cast Mary Ann in Fashion White or Azure White from the Gold Marque range or White or Blue White from the
White Orchid Range.

1st Firing
Overall Wash: Mix four parts Skin Tone 2, one part Cheek Tone 1 and one part Essence of Rose (E of R provides
extra adhesion) with Magic Medium to a fluid consistency. Condition the head with Painting Medium, wipe back
with a Multi-Wipe Towel to leave a good sheen - do not leave too dry. Apply the paint colour with a Doll Sponge
and smooth with a Large China Mop to an even coat.

2nd Firing
Lashes: Mix Grey Satin with Painting Medium, then thin to a fluid consistency with Fine Line Medium. Using a
Proliner Brush (or a shorter Ultra Lash Brush if preferred) paint fairly short lashes on the lower rims only. The
lashes are straight down without any slant.
Eyebrows: Mix Puppenbrow No.2 with Painting Medium, then thin to a fluid consistency with Fine Line Medium.
Moisten a Quill No.3 Brush in clean water, then load the brush evenly with the paint. With a light touch paint smooth
even strokes, keep the colour fairly light. Although there are only seven strokes to each brow, their direction and
angle are a wonderful challenge.
Lips: Mix three parts Puppenlips No. 1S and one part Lip Help with Painting Medium. Paint a smooth even coat on
the upper and lower lips. There is a darker outline on the upper bow and lower lip edge - to create this us a dry
Sovereign Lip Brush to blend and push the paint to the outside edge at the tops of the bows and the bottom lip
edge only. The lips should be matt, not glossy.
Nose and Eye Dots: Use the same paint mix as the lips to paint fairly small nose dots and eye dots with a Petite
Detailer Brush.

3rd Firing
Lips: Mix equal amounts of Puppenlips No. 1S and Pompadour Red Satin with Painting Medium to a fairly thick
consistency. Use a Lip Brush No.1 to paint a half-moon shape in the centre of the top lip and dark centre to the
bottom lip. There is a definite line to define the darker centres. Blend if necessary with a Blending Brush.

4th Firing
Cheeks: Mix Cheek Tone No. 1 with Painting Medium to shoe cream consistency. Apply Magic Medium to the
cheek area and wipe back with a Multi-Wipe Towel. Do not remove too much medium. Dab the Doll Sponge into
the paint and pounce lightly onto the centre of the cheek. Blend with the China Mop to a smooth even finish.
To complete Mary Ann, she has two upper teeth and sleep eyes. For further reference on setting sleep
eyes see Techsheet TSSI01 for simple step by step instruction.
If you don't want to fit sleep eyes, glue mohair lashes onto the glass eyes just above the iris using Decorator
Glue. Allow to dry then set the eyes in the usual way.
